With the glaze slowly starting to peel off the well polished Barack Obama lately it is as if people have forgotten that Mrs. Clinton a) has yet to truly release her delegates, and b) now says she intended to throw her name in the bag for the nomination at the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
Now, I don’t want to sound as if this an “I told you so” moment, but it fits pretty well with the idea that the campaign that ended a few short months ago for Hillary, really never did. As they said of Nixon some years after his exit from the White House, “He’s [She’s] tanned, rested and ready”. Add to this the fact that 7-8 Super Delegates, in a surprise move removed their pledges to Barack Obama just in the last couple of weeks. It begs the question, “What are Bill and Hillary doing behind the scenes that could possibly cause a shift of any proportion at this late stage of the game?” This was no monumental shift mind you, just a blip, but a blip at this point, when the nomination is all but locked up” for the shinny new penny of a candidate, is something to cause pause.
Now, I could be wrong on this. I know (pause for effect) a shutter just went though your collective spines. It may simply be that Hillary is baulking for the cameras so to speak to rejuvenate the money flow in order to pay off the balance of her debt. I do not believe Obama has made an official offer to pay it off for her, he merely asked others to step up on her behalf with donations. Considering the Clintons have not paid off a debt they incurred in decades with their own money, it would fit Hillary’s MO. Legal defense funds and all are not as stylish as they once were, but have proven effective for them in the past. So if they need money, it’s easier to get some of yours than to dig into that bust of an advance Hillary got for that book.
So, whether Hillary is serious (which I think she is) about taking the nomination in a Political Death Match at the DNC, or whether she is just busy doing debt management, the rest of the summer promises to be interesting.
But what would I know; I’m just an Average American.

Look, you and I both know that there are plenty of ways Obama could be working on her debt. Fact is, outside of one remark, he isn't. That debt, he mistakenly believed, would keep her in check until the very end when he might then offer assistance. SURPRISE!!! She isn't interested in playing second fiddle to an upstart on the ticket or in the press. |

| No I don't agree AA. Tell me, if you were a Democratic officeholder and superdelegate, and you were asked to, at the convention flip your support, and back Hillary, and you still had to do your own fundraising, and run for re-election in the fall, needing the support of Democratic voters and donors, would you? If Govs Napolitano, Sebellius or Richardson tried this, that would be the end of their political careers, unless Hillary won. But since she lost the vast majority of states, and her negatives are already skyhigh, well, lets assume she lost. The 3 governors would be facing very hostile legislative support, they'd be unable to work with their own party, and they' be laughed at openly by the Republicans. In 2012, if Hillary doesn't win the nomination, or the White House, then would any future Democratic president, or Governor give them any appointed office? Or the State party, would they trust them to even take out the trash? In order to flip support, they gotta know they're assured victory. But by flipping on Obama, the Democrats can kiss away 80% of the black vote. Which would doom the party.

*** Sen. Obama and his wife each made the maximum allowable donation to Sen. Clinton's campaign, of $2,300 each. That is the most allowable by law. His campaign may not give directly to hers, money given to a candidate must either be spent on the campaign, or returned to the donor. He can't shovel it from his campiagn to hers. Now, some candidates have their own PAC's, and then they can give more, but Sen. Obama doesn't have one of those. He has also made efforts to get his supporters to give, and that has yielded some money. It won't be until after the election is over that she gets much more.
And Clinton suspended her campaign, so she holds her delegates until the convention. As did Sen. Edwards, and Rep. Kucinich and on the other side, Gov. Mittens, and Gov. Huckabee, and Rep. Paul. The only card they have left to play is their delegates. The problem is for all of them, is that mathematically they have no chance to win, unless McCain or Obama step aside or die.
Now, if Clinton can convince Democratic Super Delegates, who mostly are going to have to stand for re-election themselves this year, or in 2010 (most Supers are national or state office holders) that they should go traitor on Obama (and that none of Obama's supporters won't do the same to them), at the floor of the convention, and then support her after the fine bit of political unity she and Bill have shown the last 3 months, AND then convince Obama's supporters to vote for her because she didn't really stab Obama in the back... whew!
This is all machinations, backroom stuff, to keep her name up front, and get money. Bill still has a book to sell, and speaking fees to earn, and she wants a career going forward. The pundits are creating news where there is none.
