Republicans will turn out for McCain
Even though John McCain (R-AZ) has done a lot of pandering to the "republican base" in the last few years independent voters still hold a spot in their hearts for the maverick senator from Arizona. We remember his late-night appearances on the Daily Show and the bipartisan McCain-Feingold environmental bill. Apparently so do a lot of republicans.
The recent criticism McCain has endured from conservative comedians like Limbaugh, Hannity and Coultier only enhances his standing in the world of rational thinkers. I cannot help but think these pundits know this and are concsiously bashing him so he will regain his appeal to independent voters and on-the-fence democrats, which he'll need in the general election. Don't be fooled, die-hard republicans will still turn up in droves on election day to support the republican nominee.
If Karl Rove has to come out of retirement, like Michael Jordan did the first time, to build base support for McCain, he will. McCain has already publicly forgiven Rove for submarining his campaign in 2000. With the highest position in the land up for grabs he will do whatever it takes to win.
If Fox News fully embraced John McCain as their next-in-line, he would lose a lot of support from people who have supported him for the majority of his career. All the pandering McCain has done has paid off so far, he is going to be the republican presidential nominee. It will be a real political miracle if McCain can keep the support he gained in the past from independent voters.
And that's just want to the right-wing pundits want to happen.
