Thx CLB, the whole right wing language of violence crap is so predictable. After the right wing nutjob tried to fly a Cessna into the White House when Bubba and Hillary were co-Presidents, Rush spent years going on about the Haitian Air Force, and really yukked it up about any attempt of violence against the Clintons.
Then, when Al Queda did the same kind of assault, Rush Limpy sang a very different tune.

This current food shortage IMO is driven more by unbridled capitalism than anything else. The lust for money has driven farmers to change their crops in order to reap the most profits. In the business world thats known as maximizing your assets but in the real world it means people go hungry.
It is my firm belief that we need stringent controls on anything that we need to sustain our existence. Our utilities, heath care and food supply need to be separated from the capitalistic bottom line philosophy. We need planned food production and co-op or municipally owned utilities as well as universal, single payer, health care.
The market has driven us to this abyss, we need to realize it and take control away from it. the market only serves those at the top.

As for Rush Limbaugh, why is he not in jail? Pusbag that he is...

Careful Acebass, you might get yourself in a never-ending argument with Adam.

Indie wrote an excellent article on health care, and how unlike other services, the conventional thinking of the free market place and government non interference doesn't naturally apply:

I'm not saying that the State should nationalize our hospitals and doctors like Great Britain did, because government bureaucracy is no better than any other bureaucracy in managing the delivery of health care. The British system has marked inefficiencies built in due to excessive central control and red tape. I'd rather the delivery of medicine be left to the health care professionals.

But the access to and payment for health care services is far too critical a national security and basic human rights issue to be left in the hands of private for-profit insurance. That side of health care has to be separated from capitalism, just like our police/fire departments and armed services are separated from capitalism.

On the food issue--

1- the economics of food prices provide the signal to farmers, and fisherman and ranchers to produce more food. And if there is a shortage, the high price is a good thing. If there is no shortage, then the high price means it is all speculation.

2- getting more food to the world's poor is an issue, and either requires 2 fixes, free food/subsidies, or higher wages for the poor. No one not named Bush or Cheney advocates the deaths of millions.

3- foreign policy and pro democracy movements, and bringing more freedom to more people - The Bushies and the Can't Shoot Straight Gang talked about expanding freedom throughout the Middle East, but what has happened is they have emboldened the tyrants of the world, and freedom is falling down, according the Rand Corp yearly study. With more freedom, you get more people doing more things that can create more wealth, and that can be more food. If there was more freedom in places like Myanmar, Vietnam, across Asia and Africa, and South America, more people could have more property rights, and could invest their labor and capital into building farms, and growing food. W/o those rights, people don't do those productive things. Also, if these nations did these things, then they'd get wealthier, and their birth rates would fall (middle class women have less babies, spend more time taking the pill, and doing Spin classes).

Well, yes and no. High gas prices are a good thing when it comes to spurring conservation and development of alternative clean energy sources. It pushes the market in the right direction in the long run. But as in high food prices, which segment of the economy is the biggest loser? The poorest.

And as you say, if these high prices are a consequence of a market artifice and speculations, like incredibly high home prices before the bubble burst, then high food prices are not necessarily signaling a shortage or utilization issue as much as a fault in the distribution chain.

RE: voting ID, I think what we need is a state-by-state counter referendum that forces state governments to fully fund and provide any and all IDs those states require to vote. We have a situation where state laws (and in Missouri, an attempt at a CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT) are clearly abrogating the right of every citizen to vote, whether they have ID or not. If states want to pass a law to prevent fraud, they should also have to pay the related costs to ensure that every citizen can vote. In short, force these anti-voter measures to become tax increases and see how popular they remain.

Are we really going to accept that essential rights of citizenship can be denied? No We Won't. Are we going to succeed in forcing a recognition of and solution to this problem thanks to the poor nuns in Indiana and others? Yes We Will.

Well, heck of a show. Felt like I spent the whole time running to stay up with the energy (to me that's a good thing-- means the momentum was there for listeners was there too) and the comments here reflect that.

Phaedrus, I must have you confused with someone else? You're comments on air and here are not as "conservative" as I recollect them to be? Maybe your one of them dang Independents we just can't nail down?!

That YT clip of Hagee/McCain is from Brave New Films (or so I have been told). We created one too, and presuming I can launch the new AP site this week, you will be able to download and pass it around from there as well. We also have some new McCain clips we designed and the Limbaugh clip should be ready before next week's show so as soon as I can make that available I will. We are doing audio though, not video. I think audio is more useful just in terms of storage and mass dissemination-- video needs more bandwidth and frankly, takes more time then I want to invest in getting this stuff up and out there.

Really, I am SOOOOOOO ready to take it to Rush and the rest of his radical-ass crew. You have no idea!

On healthcare, years ago I read the most compelling piece on how healthcare and other non-commodities systems should be valued differentlly. I need to find the author and bring him on to discuss that...
